In 19th-century Mexico, landowner's daughter Catalina and brooding, mysterious Alejandro have a passionate but ill-fated romance, as the latter returns years later, now wealthy and cruel, to torment all who wronged him. This ultimately leads to ruin for both families until a new generation finds a path to hope and peace.
